Word problems are perhaps one of the least popular and most difficult aspects of primary maths that children encounter. Often children can do the calculations- the mechanical aspect - but put the calculation into a written context and you will frequently hear, "Is it and add or a take away" In order to help children who find word problems difficult and frustrating, this book ttakes a structured and varied approach to teaching the skills of solving word problems. The earlier part of the book uses a pictorial approach and involves a practical activity eg cutting and pasting the relevant word sentences to match the word problem. Later pages are intended for older children and extend the introduction to simple writing frames. The step by step approach aims to help children gain confirdnce in their ability to succesfully tackle word problems. It is important that children anjoy their experience of mathematics. Success in the early stages of learning helps the children feel confident in their ability, and confidence is vital if they are to continue to succeed.
